Operation Brotherhood was a group that, for lack of a better explanation, was a type of Peace Corps that worked in Laos from 1956-75. The group consisted mostly of college-aged Filipino men and women -- including my parents. It is this group that I plan to research during my fellowship and hopefully write a book about.

Growing up, I had only cursory knowledge of this group. My parents and their circle of friends always were very tight and I knew that they all had been in Laos and worked with the Laotian people, but for whatever reason, I never truly made an effort to understand exactly how much they were affected by their experiences.

Then in 1998, I attended a reunion of Operation Brotherhood and its encompassing group, Mekong Circle International, and made the effort to connect with them. Interacting with everyone and listening to their stories, I began to realize just how much all of their lives were shaped by their experiences in Laos, and it made me want to tell the story of Operation Brotherhood.
